Hi I’m Clare
I’ve combined two decades of experience working in and with social housing, with my specialist knowledge of data protection legislation, as well as quality assurance and risk management expertise that goes back almost 30 years, (and a love of wordplay!) to develop the PURPOSE Roadmap.
When my manager said that the business wanted me to get them “GDPR ready” but they didn’t want me as Data Protection Officer, it was the catalyst I needed; I took the leap, and CP Data Protection was born.
It was summer 2017 and the race was on to review data protection policies, rewrite privacy notices, and roll out training, before the GDPR became law in May 2018.
I never expected to find myself reading the legislation, case studies, and blogs, while rocking my baby to sleep, but I was enjoying every minute! I soon realised that being able to read and understand the law is only the first step to compliance; I needed to help clients build and embed practical processes and strategies.
As I continued to work on better understanding my clients’ challenges, I called on the critical thinking tools that had been so helpful in my quality assurance and risk management work over the years.Eventually I realised that I had accidentally (or was my subconscious working away in the background?) developed a framework that spelled out the word PURPOSE.
It perfectly brings to life my maxim for everything data-related: “Start with purpose”!

Purpose first
Did you know that the word “security” only features once in the GDPR Principles, but the word “purpose” is included 12 times?
It’s impossible to get anything else right in data protection without a clear purpose for the data and the processing of the data. In the first module we explore what “purpose” means in relation to data protection, and how to use that to underpin lawful data processing.
Fair, lawful & transparent processing is the first of the GDPR Principles, and in this module we also cover the other Principles.
Understand & manage risk
The potential for harm is all around us, especially when it comes to the processing of people’s data, so in this module we consider data-related risks, including how to identify them, and how to choose the best controls to manage those risks.
Roles & responsibilities
Without clear roles and responsibilities in data protection, like any other area of work, we would struggle to get anything done effectively. In this module we highlight the legal requirements of the DPO role, and how the DPO role interacts with others with responsibility. We cover the legal definitions of data subjects, controllers, processors, and the ICO too, and how each of these parties interact with each other.
Policies and Procedures
The simplest way to support organisations to follow best practice is to provide clear, easy-to-use documents. In this module you will receive templates for the standard data protection policies and procedures, including a DP Policy, CCTV Policy, DSARs Procedure, and much more.
Ongoing communication
With a topic as complex as data protection, communication should be ongoing, to ensure the importance continues to be understood and the correct procedures followed.
